"Utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in the Treatment of Eating Disorders and Substance Use Disorders"
Dr. Gale Gnade, Ph.D Focus Treatment Centers (2 CEU) The treatment of Eating Disorders is often thought of as a complex and trying endeavor, with high rates of relapse and difficulty with motivation for change. Therapists and family members alike often find themselves entangled in a complex web of symptoms including rigid cognitive styles with high rates of rules, rituals and other behaviors that sustain the disorder. Extremely high levels of anxiety with these clients impedes processing during traditional talk therapy thus leading to low levels of actual behavior change in recovery. More recently Dialectical Behavior and Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy have shown promise in the treatment of Eating Disorders along with Neurological approaches that address the neurological substrates of the disorder. Acceptance Commitment Therapy (a third generation of Behavior Therapy) has also been utilized in the treatment of Eating Disorders. Though the research jury is still out on ACT’s effectiveness, for clinicians and clients that have been utilizing ACT, there is a plethora of anecdotal evidence. Acceptance Commitment Therapy is derived from Relational Frame Theory and Contextual Behavior Therapy.
